I am a self-taught portrait artist but with a twist. I
use my ability to draw with graphite pencil and combine this with my
love of wool. After turning a very small picture into a gigantic set of
dots for fun.
It gave me the idea to use my
complex shading to interpret my subject’s visual representation. By
completing a lengthy chart and coding process, the chart displays the
position and colour of the thousands of individual stitches, that stitch
by stitch and row by row I follow, creating portraits of family,
friends, pets, animals or pictures of things that you would hold dear.
The chart is where the character and beauty of the "Wooling" begin. I
use the medium of wool because it is a natural fiber that to me emits
warmth and serenity, without loosing strength and force. It is also an
underappreciated resource. Though the colour palette can be limited at
times, choosing the right combination of fibers will illicit a sense of
unity and the feeling of completion to my finished work. Finishing
touches brings out the 3-D quality and depth and brings the stitches
into crystal clarity whist also helping to unite and diffuse the
stitches into a whole.
All faces are unique
and have their own life story to tell, however young or old. I capture
the unique essence about that one person, so that I bring out a part of
their character. That you may be able to relate to that person. That
you can vision meeting that man, woman or animal, and feel that you know
them a little more through seeing my interpretation of them. That
whatever you are seeing invites and delights your eyes and soul to a
deep, rich, new experience, with reverence and gives an insight into
what makes wool an amazing art form.
